What is a Pre-AP Class?

"Pre-AP" stand for "Pre-Advanced Placement".  These classes are designed to better prepared students for Advanced Placement Courses (college-level classes) in high school, and are offered at Henderson Middle School in the core subject areas:  English, Math, Science and Social Studies.

Pre-AP classes involve
  • a more complex curriculum
  • deeper analysis
  • more rigorous assignments
  • in-depth discussions
  • collaboration
  • challenging independent work

Who qualifies as a Pre-AP student?

Students who have been identified as "gifted/talented" are usually placed in at least one Pre-AP class.  Click here to learn more about the traits of giftedness.  Additional information about the GT program in the LRSD can be found here.  Not just GT students take part in these classes, however.  Students who have shown a strong aptitude for the subject, good work ethic, and creativity may also be placed in Pre-AP classes.

What is the difference between grade-level English and Pre-AP English?

Both grade-level and Pre-AP classes engage students in the same skills and knowledge, however the Pre-AP class may move through material at a faster pace and involve a more complex curriculum.  Pre-AP students can expect more reading and preparation outside of class time, as well as a significant project to complete each quarter.  Good organizational skills and time-management are essential for success in a Pre-AP class.

Pre-AP English students will learn to use a variety of strategies which require higher-order thinking skills.  Each quarter, they will prepare an additional project or task to a demonstrate deeper understanding of some of the unit outcomes.  For more information, please view the syllabus page.
